Activity 3: Screencasting & MV YouTube

For this activity, I had some difficulty figuring out how to begin my screencast. I had the app and the extension, but when I went to create a video, it was not working. This began the frustrating process of trial and error. After several attempts, I realized that when I was clicking on the screencasting option for video, it was opening another window BEHIND my current window, giving me the options I needed to choose from to begin recording. Once I figured that out, it was no problem. This first complete attempt is not the best, but it serves it's purpose to help students and parents find and navigate my website. Hopefully if they know how to get there they will use it more often and make the time I put into it more worth while! I use it for so many things, including reminders, announcements, online conference signups, calendars of events, tutorials, a practice calendar, and extra practice websites. My intent is good to help support what we are doing in class, so I sure hope this helps!

  1. A lot of these tools take some trial and error to figure out. I am glad that you eventually got the app to work. I think the video looks good. For something like this you might think about making 2 shorter videos, one with how to get to the website and one with what is on the website. People seem to gravitate toward shorter videos so finding a way to accomplish that is always useful.

Do you think you might use this in your class in some other ways beyond creating this video to show parents and students how to get to your website?

    1. I might eventually cut this into two videos, but what I find overwhelming for others is when there are multiple places for people to find information. I would rather show my students and their parents how they can jump ahead as needed. Eventually if the feedback I receive tells me it would be more user friendly for two shorter videos, I will remake them.

In class, I have brainstormed many ways to use this tool. For example, I can explain to my math students any strategy, similar to how khan academy works. I could also use it for pointing out non-fiction text features in articles, showing how to give constructive feedback to peers, or ways to improve the formatting of a writing project.

    2. I like these ideas. I also prefer less clicks so I am a fan of 1 video vs. 2, especially if people have to watch both of them. We each have to figure out our audience and what works for them.
